A Bit of History

Beginnings
Alaska Gateway Correspondence School has existed
since July 1, 1976, when the state of Alaska
divided the state into local school districts or
Rural Education Attendance Areas. The
Correspondence School was set up as a separate
school within the Alaska Gateway School District to
serve students who live in remote sites not served
by schools. It has expanded to serve families who,
though living near communities, wish to teach their
children at home.

Trailblazing
Teacher
Michael Buck was the first correspondence
teacher hired. Previously, he had worked as a
correspondence study teacher in Delta Junction. He
stayed with the program until 1996.

Extras in the
80's
During the 1980,s two other teachers, Roger
Reitano, from 1981-82, and Darrel Sonnenberg, from
1986-88, supplemented the teaching staff. In 1997,
Russ Persson, who has taught in the district for
many years, took over as advisory
principal/teacher.
Darrel Sonnenberg served as special education
teacher for several years.
