A Bit of History

Beginnings

Alaska Gateway Correspondence School has existed since July 1, 1976, when the state of Alaska divided the state into local school districts or Rural Education Attendance Areas. The Correspondence School was set up as a separate school within the Alaska Gateway School District to serve students who live in remote sites not served by schools. It has expanded to serve families who, though living near communities, wish to teach their children at home.

At right, Michael Buck, advisory teacher, visits a family living along the Yukon River.

Trailblazing Teacher

Michael Buck was the first correspondence teacher hired. Previously, he had worked as a correspondence study teacher in Delta Junction. He stayed with the program until 1996.

Extras in the 80's

During the 1980,s two other teachers, Roger Reitano, from 1981-82, and Darrel Sonnenberg, from 1986-88, supplemented the teaching staff. In 1997, Russ Persson, who has taught in the district for many years, took over as advisory principal/teacher.

Darrel Sonnenberg served as special education teacher for several years.
