HOW CAN I HELP?
1. Parent’s can encourage students to take the entire meal so that they receive the full nutritional benefits.
2. Parent’s can help students understand the system of choosing at least three items.
3. Reading the menu with your child and having students circle their choices will help keep the meal lines moving! 4. Fruit and vegetable choices have increased at breakfast and lunch. Students may select as many different choices as they will eat. As a rule, students do not eat enough from the fruit and vegetable group each day. Encourage your students to eat more fruits and vegetables and to try those that are not familiar.

How Menus Are Planned

The Alaska Gateway School District school meals are planned by a school nutrition specialist, to reflect the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and student preferences. Food specifications and food preparation assist in this effort. It is a continuous process that requires the cooperative efforts of students, Child Nutrition Services, and the food industry. A variety of fruits and vegetables are offered to help increase our student’s consumption of fruits and vegetables. Nutrient analysis is available upon request.

AGSD uses an Offer versus Serve system to allow the students some freedom in making their food choices. Students are offered a minimum of five food items at lunch and four food items at breakfast. Students must take a least three of the items offered at the meal, but may select one of each item.

WHAT ARE THE FIVE CHOICES For LUNCH?

Item 1. Meat/Meat Alternate -This is usually in the main entrée.
Item 2. Bread-This can be in the main entrée (as in a sandwich), or offered separate, as in a piece of corn bread.
Item 3. Fruit/Vegetable-Students can take a variety or just one serving. One serving = 3⁄4 cup.
Item 4. Fruit/Vegetable- Students can take a variety or just one serving. One serving = 3⁄4 cup.

WHAT ARE THE FOUR CHOICES for BREAKFAST?
